Biography
Patrick Henning
I am tempted to say I am a self-taught watercolorist but that would be to ignore those painters who allowed me to look over their shoulder, those who shared important lessons in technique and materials, and most of all those who encouraged me. I began painting competitively in 2013 at local and regional plein air events. Painting plein air in water media, a prisoner of the elements and the outdoors, presents very specific challenges. Each day is different, and my affinity for meteorology is intense. Watching the skies and embracing the moisture, the heat and the cold, the insects and the sunlight, has proven a necessity. Painting outside demands you and your watercolor become part of the atmosphere. Painting in a timed event is, I suppose, somewhat like performing live music. There is no chance of replaying a wrong note struck.
My studio work and plein air paintings are an attempt to reveal the beauty of light and water. My figurative drawings and paintings are an attempt to capture the eternal beauty of Eve.
